Multimedia Installation
Bindings, is an installation triptych, each inspired by an autobiographical event spanning from childhood to present day. Quilting is incorporated into each installation because of its value as a visual metaphor for community. It also has historical significance in Appalachian culture. The ability to sew has not only been a source of validation among women in my community but a creative expression as well and means for remembering or honoring the past.
Using fabric and sewing skills in my work is a way of archiving and preserving my past. The combination of installation, interactivity, media, and found objects creates a multi-layered experience. I am interested in repurposing found objects and artifacts to re-contextualize the autobiographical content for a contemporary audience.
